Seeing beauty in imperfections
I wanted to make a table with movement. Yellow cedar is one of my favorite woods to work with. The inlay and tips of the legs are padauk. I made a second walking table in walnut with inlay of yellow cedar as a yin yang complement. Sometimes the wood tells me what it wants to be, like the headboard below. I saw a marking in the wood that looked like a closed eye of a bird. A swan's head and neck emerged as I worked on it. It finished by becoming a headboard. I look at wood and find a knot or twist or patterns in the grain. The imperfection tell me what it wants to become.
